My beautiful hometown Jakarta is celebrating its 495th anniversary tomorrow. So, if you ever wanted to visit the massive, multicultural capital of Indonesia, there’s no better time than now!

The city is abuzz at present as the Jakarta Fair has returned after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, and is on from June 9 to July 17. This month we also hosted the Jakarta E-Prix – the city’s inaugural Formula E electric motorsport race – after two years at Ancol Beach.

Whether you’re considering Indonesia for your summer holiday or visiting for work, here’s a local girl’s guide to five fun spots you absolutely must visit in capital city Jakarta!

Petak Sembilan

Love shopping and food? Head to Petak Sembilan, which is located in the old market, popularly known as Chinatown. You can buy many fresh vegetables, seafood and authentic Chinese products like sauteed cuttlefish and fried tofu here.

In fact, there is an abundance of Chinese products like costumes, electronics, shoes and more. I used to go to this vibrant street market a lot with my mom to shop for many cute items.

The Chinese cuisine here is so authentic and tasty that it keeps customers and tourists coming back. The red roof tops compliment the street market to give it a very aesthetic appeal.

The beautiful shrine at the centre of the market is a photographer’s delight. The narrow streets are packed with big and small shops in a unique way, giving it a very friendly vibe.

Dunia Fantasi (Dufan or Ancol Dreamland Park)

Dufan is the right place to create fun memories together with family and friends. This amusement park is guaranteed to give you a thrilling experience no matter what your age. Dunia Fantasi literally means “Fantasy World” and the area is nothing short of it!

With amazing roller coasters and plenty of watersports, Dufan is the perfect place for those who cherish adventure and joyrides. This fantasy land in Jakarta is a hotspot for thrills. It is always a fun experience every time I go there.

And if you land up on 22-Jun-22 (the 495th anniversary of Jakarta), you could even get free entry tickets!

Pulau Seribu

Pulau Seribu is my favourite destination every time I want to take a break from everything. Just me and myself.

Also known as the Thousand Islands, Pulau Seribu is a heavenly spot for complete relaxation. Residents of Jakarta dream about going to this area to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Just the thought of this location’s cool blue sea, coconut palm trees and golden beaches evokes serenity and relaxation. Once you get here, you just don’t want to leave!

There are many watersports here including snorkelling. Even the animals here are in full-on relax mode, with turtles chilling around humans. This is the perfect getaway place for tourists and residents alike.

Hutan Kota GBK

This is a vast green recreational area in the city with an array of sports fields, a baseball stadium, restaurants and picnic areas. I always go here with friends to have a picnic and deep conversations about life.

There are great places to eat in Hutan Kota GBK with beautiful skyscrapers crowning the landscape. Statues of historic significance add character to the green zone. Many ceremonies, events and gatherings are held here, and the area is popular for a good time out with family or friends – with lots of photos!

Jakarta Aquarium

This aquarium is a truly astonishing experience. You can marvel at the marine life flowing all around, enhancing your awe of aquatic life. It’s a must-visit not just for tourists but a part of local residents’ lives too – I went to the Jakarta Aquarium on my first date!

Located in Neo Soho, a leisure complex in Jakarta, this is the largest aquarium in all of Indonesia. There is a wildlife safari located nearby too! Besides a great variety of marine fish and aquatic wildlife, you’ll find plenty of exciting shows and activities here.

One of the fun activities here is aqua trekking, which allows you to swim amidst the oceanic wilderness and play with cool creatures. Fancy meeting a stingray this summer? See you in Jakarta!
